Born in 1934, Alasdair Gray graduated in design and mural painting from Glasgow School of Art, and since 1981 has mainly lived as a self-employed artist, having written, designed, and illustrated seven novels, four short story collections, and four books of verses. Translations of his fiction are available in most European languages and Japanese. His latest work is an English version of Dante’s Divine Comedy in prosaic terza rima, currently printed by Canongate, who brought out his version of HELL in 2018, and will publish the whole trilogy in 2021.

This selection of his poems is the first to be chosen by an American publisher.
